Instagram users struggle to rediscover previously viewed posts, and 42.6% give up searching, leading to frustration, lost engagement, and 32.8% dissatisfaction. They need a more efficient solution.

Ideation

Ideation

We brainstormed HMW questions with two engineers, grouped ideas into themes, and used dot voting to identify the most promising solutions.

How Might We simplify the process of finding previously watched content?

How Might We reduce frustration and wasted time for users?

We evaluated the selected ideas by mapping them on an impact/effort matrix, based on their potential impact on user experience and business metrics, as well as the effort required for implementation.

Make a History or viewed section
In this section, users can find the content they’ve seen easily. It also can have a search bar or date-based filters to make it more findable.

Include a review page in the Explore section to facilitate the discovery of new content and the rediscovery of previously seen content in one place.

Recent Activity Log: Create a detailed activity log that records all user interactions, including likes, comments, views, saves, and shares, making it easy to revisit any content.

make and integrate the history section search functionality with the main search function on Instagram

Advanced Search Filters: allowing users to search by date, location, posted source, and type of content (photo, video, reel).

Allow users to filter what they have seen based on their past interactions (liked, commented, saved)

Improve the filters in Instagram search like adding a “viewed” filter in the search section of Instagram.

Natural Language Processing (NLP): Incorporate NLP to enable users to search using natural language queries

AI-powered content analysis to automatically categorize and tag content based on objects, themes, emotions, and even aesthetics (color palettes, styles). This allows users to search for content based on these attributes, even if they don't remember specifics.

In-App Screenshot Button: Add a dedicated button within the Instagram app to take screenshots. (specially for stories)

save all in-app screenshots to a dedicated "Story Screenshots" folder within the app. Automatically tag screenshots with relevant information (e.g., the user who posted the story, date, ...)

Enable easy sharing of saved story screenshots with friends directly within Instagram.

Enhance the Saved Section to make content retrieval more convenient by adding features such as a search function or the ability to choose folder covers from the gallery.

Allow users to save stories

Allow users to tag content they find interesting directly as they browse, creating a personal index that can be searched or browsed later.

Weekly Highlight: Allow users to compile and share a selection of their favorite content they have seen from the past week.

Modify the home screen to include a “memory lane” feature showing snapshots of past interactions.

Provide multi-view search results that display content in different formats (e.g., grid view, list view, small view) for easier navigation. like in ios gallery.

go to just watched button in each profile

Make a weekly or monthly reminder of the posts users have seen in a week like Google Photos.

Collaborative Saving: Allow users to share saved content collections with friends or groups.

Dedicate a new section in each profile page for the content users have seen from that specific page.

subtle visual indicators in each profile that shows which content we had seen before

Search on each profile

Utilize AI to create a personal “year in review” highlighting significant interactions and content.

smart bookmarks that automatically categorize and tag content based on user interaction and preferences.

Context-based Rediscovery Triggers:

suggest relevant previously viewed content. For instance, if a user is at the gym, a fitness tutorial they previously watched might be relevant.

Combine Instagram with a personal digital assistant to suggest content based on calendar events or reminders.

daily or weekly challenges that encourage users to find and interact with specific types of past content( a post you commented on from June 2021)

Improve the Scroll functionality through a feature like the Date indicator.

Implement a visual or image-based search like Google Image search so users can search by the photo they have.

We focused on "quick wins" high-impact, low-effort solutions. Adding a history section (like similar features on other platforms) would be the best solution. We considered three options for the location of this feature:

Aligning Content Rediscovery with User Behavior

Aligning Content Rediscovery with User Behavior

To enhance content rediscovery, we integrated the solution into Instagram’s existing Search and Explore flow, aligning with user habits. The new “Watched” tab ensures effortless access to previously viewed content.

Usability Test

Usability Test

We conducted an unmoderated usability test with 10 Iranian Instagram DAUs (ages 18–34), selected from our initial survey. After completing three rediscovery tasks with the new Watched feature, participants filled out the SUS, yielding a score of 77.5—well above the industry benchmark of 68. While the limited sample prevents broad conclusions, the results indicate strong first-time usability and clear support for content rediscovery.

Challenges and Limitations

Challenges and Limitations

No live feed to scroll: The prototype couldn’t display a realistic Instagram timeline, so users couldn’t rediscover an actual post they’d viewed earlier.

Missing task metrics: Without a live feed, we couldn’t capture time‑on‑task, success, or error rates; So evaluation relied on SUS  + qualitative notes instead.

Design Impact

Design Impact

Users appreciated the Watched section for revisiting previously watched and its filters for easier searches. The Watched tab made keyword-based rediscovery faster and more convenient.

I really love the Watched section! Sometimes I forget to save something, or I see a post and don’t realize I might want to revisit it later. Now, it feels great to have a dedicated place for this. Plus, the various filters make it so much easier to narrow down the posts and quickly find the content I’m looking for.

When I need to find something fast and only remember a keyword, searching becomes much more convenient.

On Instagram, I always go to the search section, so having the Watched tab there makes it even easier to locate previously watched content.

Long-Term Impact Reflections

Long-Term Impact

While the "Watched" section and tab improves rediscovery and user satisfaction in the short term, it's important to consider long-term behavioral and platform-wide consequences:

Reduced In-App Time

Faster rediscovery may lower overall time spent, which improves efficiency but could hurt metrics tied to total browsing duration.

Feature Overlap

The feature could reduce reliance on existing tools like Saved Posts or Search, potentially making parts of the current system redundant.

We discovered that broad metrics alone don’t reveal a feature's true impact. To measure success accurately, we needed targeted, feature-specific metrics that reflect real user behavior. General metrics might show platform-wide improvements, but they can’t pinpoint a feature's actual performance.
